How it works
Why is it called a box league? The most common term for this type of format is a "round robin" however we have chosen to go with the name box league. See below.
NAME HOME COURT 1 2 3 4 5 6 TOTALS
1 JAS THOMAS LRC X
2 GRANT SMITH WONG NAI X
3 ANDY TSUI WONG NAI X
4 STAN HO ABERDEEN X
5 ANDY LUI X
6 WAYNE MIKO HKCC X
How many players per box? - Boxes will consist of 5 or 6 competitors playing singles against all the other competitors in their box leaving a ranking of 1-5/6 for each box.
How are you placed in the league? - When you join the league you will be placed in a box relating to your Hong Kong league grading, or national ranking (juniors can enter the adult boxes as well). If there is not an available place at your grading level you will be placed into the next available one. Winning or runner-up will mean promotion while coming 5th or 6th may mean that you will be demoted and have to fight your way back up the league table. (Non graded players may have to play a grading match against a previously graded box league player before being placed).
So if you improve you will keep moving up the rankings box by box.
Opponents' details - At the start of each box league you will be sent via email the 5 names, emails and phone numbers of the competitors in your box for you to match schedules and arrange to play at a venue and time that suits your schedules.
Venues are flexible - Matches can be played at any venue, public or private or club, and this is a very important part in making this concept work. This allows players the flexibility to schedule their own matches to work in around other commitments. It's as simple as booking a court and then emailing your 5 competitors to see who is available to play you at that time. Next time you just email 4 and then so on until you are finished your matches. That's very easy in today's world of email and blackberry.
Length of each league - There will be 4 leagues per year consisting of approximately 2-3 months per league. Having only 5 matches to complete in 2-3 months gives you a good chance to play all your matches.
League 1: January 21 - March 30, 2008
League 2: April 7 - June 15, 2008
League 3: September 1 - October 19, 2008
League 4: October 27 - December 21, 2008

So if you play all 4 competitions you will be getting 20 singles matches per year, which definitely should improve your game rapidly. We all know that to improve at anything you need to do it regularly and box leagues tennis gives you consistent, challenging and highly competitive match play.
Draws - The BLTS draws and results will be updated on this website within 48 hours of receipt.
Length of matches - The matches are "best of 11 games". That means the score could be 11/0, 9/2, etc. If it is 5/5 then a tiebreaker decides the last game. This design is to make sure that each match can be finished in an hour booking. If you are able to book 2 hours then you can play a longer match but the first 11 games must count for the BLTS scoring.
